How Variety Kills Your YouTube Channel
I’m always asked "what’s the biggest mistake people make when trying to grow a YouTube channel?" My go-to answer: Variety.

I’ve studied some of the top creators on YouTube to save you 20+ hours of work.
This email will show you how to follow those channels growth tactics
— with 1 Strategy, 2 Tips, and 3 Examples.
_______________
Your Viewers Don't Know You
About 5 years ago, I was laid off from my marketing job and became determined to make YouTube my full-time job. I started uploading multiple series across several different topics, an occasional travel vlog, and also various highlights from my livestream.
Fast forward to 2023 and I’m always asked: what’s the biggest mistake people make when trying to grow a YouTube channel?
My go-to answer: Variety.

YouTube analytics of my old channel
That wide range of videos I used to upload quickly led to burnout for myself and my viewers because nobody knew what to expect from my channel.
Stop. Uploading. Random. Videos.
Instead, focus on learning exactly who your audience is and start creating videos made specifically for those viewers.
_______________
What Viewers Want to Watch

Tip #1 - Your Niche Must Be Specific
Some content creators will upload many different types of videos just because they’re running a YouTube CHANNEL.
Imagine sitting down to watch your favorite show but the newly released episode is just 30 minutes of the director talking about their favorite foods.
While you may think posting your new video on Reddit or Twitter could help your channel blow up, it could actually do significant damage to your long-term growth.
Think of a one-hit wonder in the music industry: A new singer hits it big with their first single, the singer is left unable to follow it up, then the singer is forced to move on. The same concept can apply for YouTubers, leaving your analytics to become skewed due to a metric called External Traffic Source.
An external traffic source is any link to a YouTube video that does not come from within YouTube itself. Too much external traffic can confuse the algorithm and prevent your video from being recommended to the right viewers (aka the people that truly want to watch it).

The Algorithm Tells Us, We Just Don’t Listen
MrBeast
Have you ever noticed when MrBeast promotes a new upload on social media, he almost never posts the link to the video?
We recreated Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory in real life and flew down 10 people that found golden tickets in our chocolate bars to compete for it! GO WATCH :)

MrBeast uses his influence to maximize any channel and search traffic directly to his videos. Any people that put in the effort to find and watch the video are already fans of his content. This creates a positive feedback loop where they will continue to be recommended even more of his videos.
Quzga
On my first ever YouTube channel, I had gameplay of Halo 3 sitting right next to a clip from Family Guy. Guess which had more views?

Most creators believe these types of popular videos help your channel, but they actually do more harm than good. While your channel may have a large increase in views, the only returning viewers will be your original audience.
A YouTube channel will not grow quickly if it consistently pulls in new viewers that are not interested in the content.

When something works, do it again. If it works again, do it again.
Seems simple, right? The reality of this concept doesn’t always click with most YouTubers trying to grow. You should consistently create more of what gets you the most views. This channel below is sorted by most popular:

See the pattern? Find what your audience responds to and replicate it.
There’s an audience for damn near anything and everything on YouTube, except most creators take the term YouTube channel too literally.
Your YouTube content is not the TV channel, it is the TV show.
Remember this when thinking up your next video and it will become much easier to satisfy your audience.
